CLEA EXTERNSHIP COMMITTEE
CLEA exists to advocate for clinical legal education as fundamental to the education of lawyers. CLEA and its members seek to:
-
foster excellent teaching and scholarship by clinical educators;
-
integrate clinical teaching and extend its methods into the legal education program of every law school;
-
reform legal education so as to prepare law students for excellent and reflective law practice;
-
advance regulation of legal education that insures the continued vitality of clinical education in law schools; and
-
pursue and promote justice and diversity as core values of the legal profession.
CLEA Externship Committee
The Externship Committee of the Clinical Legal Education Association ("CLEA") was created in 2011 to advise CLEA on issues relating to externships and to advocate on behalf of externship teachers. The Committee has played a significant role in supporting CLEA's advocacy on field placement issues before the ABA.
In doing so, it has helped to mobilize externship teachers nationally. It has co-sponsored Town Halls at the last four Externship Conferences. It has delivered sessions on externship standards at the last several AALS Clinical Conferences. In 2016, it delivered widely-attended webinars on new revisions to ABA standards. In 2017, it will deliver a webinar on allowing compensation for field placements under new ABA rules and will conduct a survey to determine how law schools have approached the change.
